One of the latest and most exciting advancements in regenerative medicine is Platelet Rich Plasma, known as PRP.

BU Wellness & Med Spa is proud to offer PRP therapy for a variety of medical and aesthetic needs to our clients.

Platelet Rich Plasma is a fraction of your own blood drawn and spun down in a special centrifuge, and then reinjected into damaged areas to promote cell regeneration.  Platelets are very small cells in your blood that are involved in the blood clotting process.  They release multiple growth factors that stimulate tissue growth.  In particular, PRP stimulates the growth of collagen which is the main component of connective tissue.  This promotes healing and tissue responses including attracting stem cells to repair damaged tissues.

PRP needs to be prepared in a way to ensure the maximum amount of platelets along with a high concentration of growth factors.  The more growth factors that can be delivered to the damaged tissues, the more likely tissue healing takes place.  At BU Wellness Clinic, our PRP procedures incorporate significantly higher blood platelet concentration and are much purer than PRP offered at clinics utilizing a simple bedside centrifuge to process blood draws.  Our PRP therapy procedures produce the best possible patient results and fewer inflammatory side effects due to the purity of the PRP mixture.

PRP is prepared by drawing 50cc’s of whole blood from the patient and then spinning the blood  in a special centrifuge that layers out platelets.  This 50cc’s of whole blood generally yields about 7-8cc’s of platelet rich plasma.

Prior to a PRP procedure, a patient needs to hold non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for at least 4-5 days, and may resume them one week after.  Also, patients with blood thinners including Aspirin need to hold them for one week before the procedure.

Contraindications to the administration of PRP include platelet dysfunction, low platelet count, infection, anemia, sepsis, anti-coagulation therapy and chronic skin disease or cancer.

PRP for Anti-Aging and Skin Rejuvenation

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is packed with multiple growth factors and is used for skin rejuvenation for aging and damaged skin.  PRP can stimulate stem cells to regenerate collagen and elastin for improvement of skin texture and elasticity as well as fine lines and wrinkles.  Using your own enriched plasma permits the body to remodel tissues to a healthier and younger state.  This is a great treatment for thin crepey skin, especially around the eyes and neck, and for décolletage, full face and hands.

PRP procedure takes about an hour and is performed by our medical director, Dr. Kim.  A course of treatments involves 3-4 appointments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart and results can be maintained with a single repeat treatment every 12 months.

Swelling and redness of the treated areas are common and may be dramatic, especially around the eyes, although usually only for 24 hours.  Some bruising is also to be expected and although this can be covered with make-up after the initial 24 hour period it may take 1-2 weeks to clear completely.  For this reason we would not recommend having this treatment within the 2-3 weeks before a special event.

PRP Hair Re-growth

PRP for Hair Restoration

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a proactive therapeutic option for male and female patients experiencing hair loss due to hormonal and environmental causes or stress.  PRP is an exciting non-surgical therapeutic option for patients who require stimulation of hair growth for hair loss conditions.  PRP treatment utilizes the growth factors from your own blood for healing the bald spots and hair thinning areas.

The primary purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive hair follicles into an active growth phase for thinning hair.  The dormant scalp tissues are pumped with the growth factors of PRP to give nutrition to the scalp cells, promote the supply of new blood to the hair follicles, and minimize scalp inflammation to create productive and healthy hair follicles.  As a result the scalp is rejuvenated with a renewed ability to produce thicker new hair.

As a non-surgical treatment option, we recommend PRP therapy along with Minoxidil and DHT blockers or for those patients who cannot tolerate or have side effects with these medications.

Potential side effects of PRP hair restoration are mild swelling on the forehead, mild headache, and possible tenderness of the scalp from PRP injection, that usually goes away in 1-2 days.  The decision to use PRP is a personal one and should be made after careful consideration and consultation with a physician.

Before & After

PRP for Priapus Shot (P Shot)

The name ‘Priapus’ came from Greek mythology, indicating a Greek and Roman god of gardens and male regenerative power.  The Priapus Shot indicates a specific procedure for treating a penis with blood-derived growth factors:  specifically platelet-rich plasma or PRP.

Multiple studies have demonstrated improvement in erectile function, size, and correction of Peyronie’s  disease with the use of PRP.  One of the growth factors found in PRP includes vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which provides an improvement in the health, circulation, and strength (density) of penile tissue.

When the Priapus Shot does what it should, using it on the penis will result in all of the followings:

  • Immediately larger, strengthen and straighten the penis

  • Increase size by design

(can place more in a base or in the head or wherever makes for best result)

  • Increase circulation within the penis for a healthier organ

  • Increase sensation and pleasure

(helps correct the damage from diabetes)

  • Make other therapies work better

(if you still need Viagra or Cialis, then it will work better for you)

  • No allergic reactions

  • Minimal pain

Priapus Shot

The steps of the Priapus Shot includes:

  1. Numbing lidocaine cream or local anesthetic injection is administered to the penis.

  2. Blood is drawn from the arm and is put in a centrifuge.

  3. The platelets are mixed with a few drops of Calcium chloride to help platelets release growth factors

  4. This PRP solution is injected into the penis using a tiny needle and in a way that distributes the growth factors in a proper way.

The complete Priapus Shot protocol also includes the use of a penis pump, which has been demonstrated to improve erection as a part of a penile rehabilitation program.

Priapus Shot does not intend to make any particular therapy obsolete but rather offer a protocol for enhancing an overall, synergistic approach to the health and function of the penis.

Overall, it has been shown that blood-driven growth factors (when prepared in a proper way using a kit approved by the FDA for the preparation of PRP) can improve erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, and postop. prostate surgery as part of a penile rehabilitation and successful treatment leads to better function, better relationships, and more pleasure in life.

Priapus Shot FAQ

> How does P Shot work?

The Priapus Shot procedure is a quick, usually painless, 40minute, non-surgical procedure.  The P Shot procedure begins with numbing the penis and then a simple blood draw.  Then, using a proprietary technique, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is extracted from the blood and then injected into the shaft and into the head of the penis.  There is no recovery time and the results are almost immediate in some men.  Full results appear in 2-3 months.

> When can I consider having a Priapus Shot procedure?

If you suffer with decrease sensation and pleasure, inability to achieve firmness during relations, difficulty maintaining firmness until your partner is satisfied, decrease in size (often seen with normal aging), an angle that causes pain or inability to have relations (Peyronie’s disease) or family relations strained because of any of the previously mentioned problems.

> Who can get the P Shot?

Your doctor or nurse will help determine if this procedure could work for you and your family.  Men both on and off testosterone replacement, those with diabetes, young and old can often benefit from the P Shot.  The procedure could lead to lower doses of erectile meds but may not always allow their discontinuation.  Smokers may get less results and size improvements occur less reliably.

The Priapus Shot procedure uses science shown by research to (1) decrease inflammation, (2) increase circulation & (3) remodel scar tissue.  Your provider can tailor make this protocol for you.

> Why do I need to use a penis pump after the procedure?

The complete Priapus Shot protocol includes the use of a penis pump, which as a stand-alone therapy, has been demonstrated to improve erection both as part of a penile rehabilitation program as well as an adjunct to other therapies.  The penis pump strategy, even without the PRP,  has been demonstrated to increase penis size by 2-3cm.  Adding PRP to the penis pump shows improved results according to data collected by urologists currently utilizing the Priapus Shot protocol.
